Lexington Legends News Release
APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) - The Lexington Legends will be glad to see the Greensboro Grasshoppers and Michael Stanton leave town. Stanton launched his sixth home run of the season against Lexington and nineteenth overall in the fourth inning and drove in two more runs late to lead the Grasshoppers to a 7-3 victory over Lexington.
Greensboro started the scoring in the third inning when Jameson Smith led off the inning with a walk. Smith moved to second on a walk to Hunter Mense and later scored on a single from Ryan Curry.
Stanton led off the fourth inning with his nineteenth home run of the season to give the Grasshoppers a 2-0 lead. Stanton has now hit six home runs against Lexington in 2008 while batting .395 with 16 RBI.
Lexington pulled within one of Greensboro in the fifth inning on a solo-home run from Brian Pellegrini. The blast was Pellegrini's third of the series and eighth of the season. Pellegrini's eight home runs lead the Legends despite his limited time with the team.
The close game turned ugly late when the Lexington pen surrendered four runs in the seventh inning. Smith lead off the inning with a single, Ozzie Martinez walked and Ryan Curry loaded the bases with a single. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly from Bryan Petersen. Stanton then drove home two more runs with a double off the top of the right field wall.
Matt Dominguez singled and Stanton attempted to score. Right fielder Brandon Barnes appeared to throw out Stanton at home, but catcher Max Sapp dropped the throw, allowing Stanton to score. Sapp threw Dominguez out a second to end the inning.
Lexington added two late runs in the ninth off Greensboro reliever Corey Madden.
Brandon Barnes doubled to lead off the inning and Cat Everett walked. Matt Cusick then singled to center, driving home Barnes. Center fielder Bryan Petersen's throw bounced in front of the third baseman and into the Greensboro dugout, scoring Everett.
Luis Pardo took the loss in his first start of the season. Pardo pitched four innings, allowed two runs on three hits, two walks and two strike outs. Kyle Kaminska earned his third win of the season against Lexington with five and two-third innings of one-run ball. Brandon Barnes extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the seventh inning.
Lexington will face Kannapolis in the first game of a two-game set Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Jake Leonhardt will take the mound for the Legends in his second start of the second half.
