Drive's Rally Comes Up Short, Lose 4-3
June 23, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - It appeared as if the Drive (43-32, 3-2) were primed to at the very least send Monday's series finale with the Hickory Crawdads (32-43, 2-3) to extra innings. Timely hitting, coupled with a big Hickory error put the Drive down a run with the tying run 90 feet from home, and the potential winning run at second.
But the Cinderella comeback struck midnight as Hickory reliever Matt McSwain fanned Che-Hsuan Lin to end the game, stranding Manny Arambarris at third and Kristopher Negron at second, sealing a 4-3 victory.
Trailing 4-1 heading into their final at bat, the Drive received a jolt as David Mailman laced his third extra-base hit of the game, a double which scored Luis Exposito. Arambarris then put Greenville down a run with an RBI-single. The game appeared over when Negron hit a grounder to shortstop Jose De Los Santos. But a poor throw extended the game before the previously mentioned punchout.
The Drive took the game's first lead in the bottom of the second as Exposito and Mailman hit a single and double, respectively. Will Vazquez then knocked in Exposito with an infield groundout off Dustin Molleken (5-4).
The Hickory offense turned it on, scoring all four of their runs in a three inning span. Their first run was unearned in the top of the third as Keanon Simon reached on a fielding error by Yamaico Navarro. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Jose De Los Santos singled home Simon.
Andrew Walker gave the Crawdads the lead an inning later as he singled home Erik Huber. The Crawdads capped off their scoring in the fifth Huber hit a two-run triple off reliever Kyle Fernandes.
Felix Doubront (7-5) suffered the loss in his second shortest outing of the season, allowing three runs - two earned - on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
The Drive now hit the road for a five-game road trip with stops in Augusta and Asheville. They first travel to Lake Olmstead Stadium for a three-game stint with the GreenJackets, with first pitch for tomorrow's game set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will send lefty Jose Capellan to the hill as Augusta counters with right-hander Chance Corgan.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Sunday, June 29th. The seven-game home stand will have an "All-American Fest" theme. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
