Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (3-2) ninth inning rally came up just shy versus the Lakewood BlueClaws (3-2) in the series opener at Municipal Stadium. Catcher Sean Rooney cut the lead to one in the bottom of the ninth with a base hit through the right side to score Aaron Seuss from second. After a BlueClaws error Mark Gildea came to the plate with runners on the corners, but BlueClaws closer Jared Simon got him to fly out to end the game.
BlueClaws' starter Darren Byrd (1-1) outdueled the Suns Erik Arnesen (6-2) to earn the victory. Simon picked up his eleventh save of the year.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings till Lakewood broke through in the sixth. Shortstop Freddy Galvis led the inning off with a base hit. He moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a single. Galvis came home on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Dennis Winn.
Lakewood tallied what would be the deciding run in the seventh inning after a 35 minute rain delay. First baseman Mike Durant doubled off the wall in centerfield and came around to score on a Travis Mattair RBI single.
Suns designated hitter Boomer Whiting went 2-4 with two infield singles in the game.
The Suns and BlueClaws return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 from Municipal Stadium.
