Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Reliever Edgar Ramirez has earned a promotion to the St. Lucie Mets, the New York Mets announced yesterday. Third baseman Nick Giarraputo has been added to the Gnats roster to fill the open roster spot.

Ramirez, who started the season with Savannah, was one of Savannah's best relievers in 2008. In 14 games with the Gnats, Edgar sported a 3-1 record with a 3.13 ERA. He had a 4-to-1 (24-to-6) strikeout:walk ratio during his tenure in Savannah. Ramirez becomes the fourth Sand Gnat to earn a promotion this year, joining catcher Jordan Abruzzo and pitchers Mike Antonini and Angel Calero.

Joining the Sand Gnats is third baseman Nick Giarraputo. Giarraputo played in last night's game in Rome, going 1-for-2 with 2 walks. The 6-4, 202-pound Giarraputo was a 12th round pick of the Mets in 2006 out of Simi Valley High School in Simi Valley, Calif.

Last season for Kingsport, Giarraputo hit .274 in 66 games with 34 RBI and 24 doubles. The 24 doubles were tied for the league lead. He played in three games for Brooklyn before being called up to Savannah.

The Sand Gnats (2-2) open up a seven-game homestand tonight with a 7 p.m. contest versus the Columbus Catfish. It is Guaranteed Win Night at the ballpark meaning that if the Sand Gnats can't pull out a victory, everyone in attendance will receive a free general admission ticket to another game.
