Bumgarner Named Pitcher of the Week

Augusta, GA - For the second consecutive week Augusta starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was named the Pitcher of the Week in the South Atlantic League for June 16-22. This is the third time a player for Augusta has earned Player of the Week honors in the 2008 season.
Not only was it Bumgarner's second consecutive Pitcher of the Week award, for the second consecutive time it was because of his performance against the Asheville Tourists. Bumgarner worked seven shutout innings in a 5-0 Augusta win on June 21 at Lake Olmstead Stadium over the Tourists. Bumgarner allowed just five hits, one walk and matched his career high strikeout total with 10.
The Lenoir, NC native has allowed just three runs over his last five starts, a span of 32.2 innings, for a miniscule 0.83 ERA. Bumgarner has walked just two batters while striking out 37 over the five starts.
Drafted in the first round of the 2007 draft by the San Francisco Giants, Bumgarner was the 10th pick overall and is in his first professional season of baseball. Bumgarner has compiled a 7-2 record with a 1.77 ERA in 13 starts this season. Bumgarner has also walked just 11 batters this season while striking out 84.
The 18 year old leads the team in wins, strikeouts and is second in innings pitched with 71.1 thrown this season. One of three pitchers for Augusta named to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team, Bumgarner pitched in the 49th-Annual SAL All-Star Game which was played on Tuesday, June 17.
The GreenJackets are celebrating their 20th Anniversary this season of baseball returning to Augusta. The GreenJackets are currently in the middle of a five game home stand that finishes up on Thursday, June 26.
