Providence Bruins News Release
Worcester, MA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Worcester Sharks 4-3 in overtime on Saturday evening at the DCU Center. Providence received two goals from Jamie Arniel, including the game-winner, as well as single tallies from Wyatt Smith and Levi Nelson.
Providence came out flying in the first period, controlling the play and coming up with many opportunities. Smith lit the lamp for the first time this season when he scored a beautiful power play goal at the 6:27 mark. Steve Kampfer and Joe Colborne picked up the assists on the play. Providence continued to create traffic in front of Sharks goalie Alex Stalock, but didn't find the back of the net again until the 16:49 mark. Arniel scored his second goal of the season when he came flying down the slot to beat Stalock back-door off a pass from Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman. Worcester pulled within one at the 18:10 mark with a power play goal from T.J. Trevelyan.
The P-Bruins got the scoring started early in the second when Nelson stripped a Worcester defender of the puck in the Sharks' zone and went top-shelf on Stalock. The goal at the 1:56 mark was unassisted and Nelson's first on the season. Nolan Schaefer and Kampfer picked up roughing penalties after a fight broke out in front of Providence's net at the 2:15 mark following a late hit from a Worcester player. Rookie Antoine Roussel continued to win open-ice races and drew a penalty shot at the 3:27 mark. Despite some fancy stick work, Roussel couldn't finish on his back-hand as Stalock made the save.
The third period started off slow, but Providence was able to keep the momentum and create a number of scoring opportunities. However, P-Bruins penalties cost them the lead as two Sharks players scored with the man-advantage, first Benn Ferriero at the 12:01 mark and then Justin Braun at 19:16, forcing overtime.
Providence dominated the overtime period just as they dominated play in regulation. Arniel gave Worcester a memorable finish with a shot from below the circle that sailed over Stalock's shoulder with 1:34 remaining in the extra period. Jeff Penner collected the assist on the game-winner.
Schaefer earned the win, stopping 31 of 34 shots in regulation. Stalock stopped 24 of 28 shots faced. Worcester out-shot Providence 34-28. The P-Bruins were 1-for-4 on the power play and just 2-of-5 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Friday in a 7:05 p.m. match-up with the Albany Devils.
