Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - David Leggio made 36 saves and Paul Byron assisted on both goals to lead the Portland Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on the third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night played this evening in front of a season high 5,505 in attendance at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
T.J. Brennan and Matt Ellis scored for the Pirates, and Mark Mancari added an assist to help Portland run their record to 6-2-0-0 with the victory.
Jesse Joensuu netted the lone goal for Bridgeport, now 2-5-0-0 on the season.
The Pirates struck early as Brennan lit the lamp on a slap shot from the blue line just 22 seconds into the game. Following a balanced and quiet one and a half periods, Portland's emerging power play unit clicked again with crisp passing by Mancari and Byron to find a wide open Ellis in front of the net to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Midway through the third period, the Sound Tigers trimmed the deficit to one as Joensuu scored his second goal of the season. That was as close as Bridgeport would get as Leggio was rock solid in net to help Portland maintain the lead and extend their franchise record opening home winning streak to six games.
Bridgeport out shot Portland by a mark of 37-31.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were Bridgeport goaltender Mikko Koskinen as the third star, Portland's Ellis as the second, and goaltender Leggio as the first.
