Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Grand Rapids Griffins overpowered the Rochester Americans with a 4-1 win tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. Three Griffins earned multiple points in the contest, while Kenndal McArdle (1+0) began a point streak with two points in his first two games back with the Amerks. With the loss, Rochester falls to a 3-4-0-0 record through seven games into the season.
Cory Emmerton (1+1), Derek Meech (1+1), and Francis Pare (1+1) shined for Grand Rapids, each scoring one and assisting another. Goaltender Thomas McCollum led the Griffins to victory, saving 26 of 27 shots, en route to first star honors.
Leading the Amerks was McArdle, who scored his second goal of the season since returning from Florida. Rookie defenseman Adam Comrie (0+1) also recorded his first pro point with an assist on Rochester's only goal. Netminder Jacob Markstrom saved 22 of 25 shots on goal in the losing effort.
The Amerks honored Hall of Famer Craig Charron prior to the start of the match tonight. Amerks assistant coach and former teammate Jason Cipolla presented "Sharky's" No. 5 jersey out to center ice to pay tribute to the beloved Amerk. A clip of Charron's highlights from his years in Rochester was also played on the jumbo screen in honor of his memory. The Amerks will wear No. 5 decals on their helmets for the remainder of the season, in addition to Charron's logo, which will be worn on their jersey and etched in the ice.
Left winger Jordan Owens put the Griffins up midway through the opening period with his first goal of the season, deflecting a Willie Coetzee shot past Markstrom at 9:55.
McArdle got Rochester on the board 11:23 into the second. Off a faceoff win by Scott Timmins (0+1), Comrie banked the puck off the boards and down the ice. McArdle picked it up, and opted to shoot off a two-on-one, beating McCollum.
The Griffins answered back not long after, at 16:42, with Emmerton getting one past Markstrom for his third of the season. Jan Mursak (0+1) and Meech were credited with assists.
Grand Rapids added to their tally over the Amerks in the third at 9:35 with a power-play goal. Meech powered home a goal on a wide open net with Markstrom on his back. Meech was assisted by a pair of Griffins, Emmerton and Pare, with both Meech and Emmerton earning their second points of the contest.
With only minutes remaining in the game, Pare earned his second point of the night with an empty-netter at 19:07. The goal solidified a 4-1 victory for the Griffins.
Rochester hits the road for a four-game road swing starting on Monday, October 25th with the first of back-to-back tilts with Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. The 10:00 p.m. EST contest will be the first of four meetings between the two teams this season and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
