Back-to-Back Shutouts Bring Streak to Seven
Published on October 23, 2010 under American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Just one night after Ben Bishop posted the first Peoria Rivermen shutout in 91 games, Jake Allen recorded a shutout of his own stopping all 36 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over the Texas Stars Saturday night at the Cedar Park Center. Nick Drazenovic scored in the first four minutes and Phil McRae tallied in the final four minutes as the Rivermen rattled off their seventh consecutive win.
The Rivermen have now gone 147 minutes and 37 seconds since the last goal the Rivermen allowed, dating back to the first period of Sunday's 5-2 win over Texas. The only other time in which the Rivermen have posted back-to-back shutouts since joining the AHL was when Jason Bacashihua, and Curtis Sanford combined to post three straight shutouts from Oct. 28-Nov. 4, 2005.
Drazenovic opened the scoring just 3:37 into the opening frame. Derek Peltier slapped a pass across the slot to Drazenovic who redirected the puck just inside the left post past Texas goaltender Brent Krahn for his team leading sixth of the year.
Allen saw his heaviest workload in the opening frames as he stopped all 16 shots he saw in the opening 20 minutes.
The Rivermen continued their stellar special teams play in the second period killing off all three Texas power plays. Texas's Francis Wathier put a power-play goal by Allen late in the period, but it was discussed and disallowed due to the puck being kicked in. The Rivermen were outshot again 7-6 in the period.
At 16:34 of the third Phil McRae scored his fourth of the year and gave the Rivermen a 2-0 lead. Brennan Evan's shot from the point bounced off Krahn and McRae tipped in the rebound out of mid-air from just above his knees.
A late penalty on Dave Scatchard gave the Stars a 6-on-4 chance for the last minute and a half, but Allen steered away all of the shots on the final power play for his first career shutout in just his second start. Allen posted four shutouts last season between Montreal and Drummondville in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Despite being outshot 13-5 in the final frame and 36-19 in the game, the Rivermen improved to 7-1-0-0 on the year.
The Rivermen faceoff against the San Antonio Rampage Sunday for the sixth game of their seven-game road trip at 3 p.m. The game can be heard live on 96.5 ESPN Radio in Peoria or online through www.rivermen.net.
