Admirals' Power Play Bedevils Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. - Paul Szczechura's power play goal with 5:05 remaining was the difference as the Norfolk Admirals (5-1-0-0) defeated the Albany Devils (3-2-0-0), 3-2, on Saturday night at the Times Union Center.

Norfolk forward Blair Jones had a goal and two assists while Admirals defenseman Ty Wishart had a goal and an assist.

All three Norfolk goals came on the power play while the Admirals killed all six Albany power play chances. This came one night after Norfolk surrendered three power play goals and was shut out on six of its own power play opportunities in a 3-1 loss to the Syracuse Crunch.

Norfolk opened scoring just 5:41 into the first period. Wishart sent a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through a maze of bodies and past Devils goaltender Mike McKenna for his third goal of the season.

The Admirals doubled their lead with another power play goal 2:54 into the second stanza. Wishart sent a pass from the top of the right circle diagonally across the slot to Jones at the bottom of the left circle. Jones one-timed the puck past the right leg of McKenna for his fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 Norfolk lead.

Albany battled back to tie the game in the middle of the second period. Nathan Perkovich sent a shot from the left circle between the glove and left leg of Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski at 12:40. Brad Mills tied the game at 2-2 after cutting across the left circle and sending a shot past the left leg of Tokarski at 15:08. The tying goal came as the teams played at four skaters apiece.

Norfolk went ahead for good with 5:05 left in regulation on Szczechura's fourth goal of the season. Jones sent pass from behind the net to Szczechura in the left circle. Szczechura then sent a wrist shot over the gloved right hand of McKenna for a 3-2 Admirals lead.

Dustin Tokarski (22 shots, 20 saves) earned his third win of the season. Former Admirals goaltender Mike McKenna (32 shots, 29 saves) was saddled with the loss for Albany.

Norfolk was 3-6 on the power play. Albany was 0-6.

The Admirals' four-game road trip concludes tomorrow afternoon in Worcester as they face off against the Sharks at 3:00 p.m. Due to Washington Redskins football, the game will not be broadcast on 102.1-FM or 1490-AM The Game. The Admirals return to Scope on Friday and Saturday to battle the Portland Pirates. The puck drops on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
