Pens Stop B-sens Bid For Third Straight Win In Shootout

WILKES-BARRE TWP., P.A. - The Binghamton Senators suited up at the Mohegan Sun Arena to take on the American Hockey League's only remaining undefeated team, the East Division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. After earning a shutout victory last night in Hartford, the B-Sens arrived seeking their third consecutive road win, but would fall short in the sudden death shootout, falling to the Pens 2-1.

Barry Brust, who was perfect against Hartford, started in net once again for the B-Sens, stopping all nineteen shots that came his way through the first two periods of play. Yet, Penguins goaltender John Curry was equally impenetrable, blanking the Senators on all eight of their power play opportunities as they struggled to capitalize on the man advantage.

A cross-checking penalty issued to Erik Condra with just under a minute to play in the second proved costly as the Pens were able to open up the third period with the first goal of the contest. Defenseman Steve Wagner slipped behind the defense and was able to handle a lightning quick pass from Chris Conner, which he snuck past the vulnerable Brust to take a 1-0 lead.

The Senators were not without their opportunities; they pelted Curry with 15 shots in the third in their attempt to bring the game back to a draw. Unable to score on an earlier five-on-three power play, the B-Sens were forced to pull Brust in favor of an extra attacker in the final minute of regulation. The excess of Binghamton skaters forced a pile-up in front of the Penguin net, allowing Corey Locke to push the puck past Curry with 11 seconds to go in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

The tie could not be settled in overtime, forcing a shootout. The B-Sens and Pens remained tied after five rounds. Ryan Keller and Mike Hoffman scored for Binghamton, while Dustin Jeffrey and Kevin Veilleux found the net for the Penguins. Wilkes-Barre winger Chris Conner tapped in a goal in the eighth round of the shootout. Jim O'Brien remained the B-Sens' final hope to tie, but was denied by Curry, sealing the 2-1 victory, and extended the undefeated streak for the Penguins.
