Providence Bruins News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence Bruins dropped a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the hands of a Kearns penalty shot, after having given up 2 goals in the last 25 seconds of the game.
Bridgeport got out to an early lead after a slashing penalty from Justin Hickman allowed Kearns to capitalize on the power play.
Seth Griffith ties the game 1-1 with a top shelf snipe. Austin Czarnik fought for the puck in the corner and sent the puck up to Griffith on the left wing who fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Gibson.
Providence was forced to kill a 5 minute penalty when Zac Rinaldo was called for high sticking and ejected for boarding. The penalty kill unit was able to successfully hold of the Bridgeport power play.
A minute after the prolonged kill, Frankie Vatrano scored his 26th of the season for the go-ahead goal. Griffith and Colton Hargrove made a good effort to keep the puck in the offensive zone during the Bridgeport breakout. Hargrove dropped the puck back to Griffith who sent a centering pass to Vatrano who released a one timer that went low glove side on Gibson. The P-Bruins went into the 3rd with a 2-1 lead.
Ben Sexton made it 3-1 with a beauty short handed goal. Providence carried the two goal lead all the way until the final 25 seconds of the game, until Bridgeport scored with the goalie pulled. Ex-P-Bruin Justin Florek scored just 10 seconds later to tie the game 3-3 and force over time.
Providence looked dominant for most of the overtime period and fired 8 shots on net, but Bridgeport was awarded a penalty shot 3:35 into the extra period. Kearns took the shot and went 5 hole on McIntyre to win the game for the Sound Tigers.
The P-Bruins are back home Sunday March 6th against the Portland Pirates.
