March 4, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Wild News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild announced on Friday the team expects the Stanley Cup® for its home game on Saturday, Mar. 26 at 12:30 p.m.
Fans will have an opportunity to see the most famous trophy in all of professional sports when it stops in for Iowa's home game at Wells Fargo Arena versus the Chicago Wolves. All hockey fans have an opportunity to see the Stanley Cup when it comes to town. The Stanley Cup will be displayed on the upper concourse of Wells Fargo Arena at 12:30 p.m. and throughout the duration of the game. Fans will also have an opportunity to take a picture with the Stanley Cup. Due to the time constraints, fans will be permitted to take only one photo with their phone or digital camera. A ticket to the Iowa Wild game does not guarantee all fans will have the opportunity to take a photo.
The Iowa Wild is offering a specialty package that includes access to a breakfast buffet, one drink ticket and a ticket to the March 26th game. The package is extremely limited and starts at $50 ($35 for Iowa Wild VIP Members). The buffet takes place at ice level and starts at 10:30 a.m. Those attending the buffet will have early access to the arena where a special guest is expected to be waiting as early as 10:30 a.m. A professional photographer will be on hand for those who would like a professional portrait.
The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff winner. Since the 1914-15 season, the Cup has been won a combined 95 times by 18 active NHL teams and five defunct teams. The Montreal Canadiens have won the Cup a record 24 times and are the most recent Canadian-based team to win the cup, having won it in 1993 . The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2015. The current Stanley Cup, topped with a copy of the original bowl, is made of a silver and nickel alloy ; it has a height of 35.25 inches and weighs 34.5 pounds.
Unlike the trophies awarded by the other major professional sports leagues of North America, a new Stanley Cup is not made each year; winners keep it until a new champion is crowned. It is unusual among trophies, in that it has the names of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved on its chalice . Initially, a new band added each year caused the trophy to grow in size, earning the nickname "Stovepipe Cup". In 1958 the modern one-piece Cup was designed with a five-band barrel, which could contain 13 winning teams per band. To prevent the Stanley Cup from growing, when the bottom band is full, the oldest band is removed and preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a new blank band added to the bottom. It has been referred to as The Cup, Lord Stanley's Cup and The Holy Grail.
The Wild continues on a seven-game road trip starting Wednesday, Mar. 2. The team makes stops in Grand Rapids (2), Texas (2), Manitoba (2), and Milwaukee (1) before returning home on Sunday, Mar. 13 to host the Milwaukee Admirals at 5 p.m. The Subway/Star 102.5 Combo Pack is available for purchase starting at $12. The combo pack includes one ticket, one hot dog, one soda, and one Subway coupon. The Wild hosts a live red jersey auction following the game courtesy of the American Heart Association. A canned food drive presented by Billion Buick, Price Chopper, and Zerorez takes place during the game, benefitting MoveTheFood.org.
