Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 12-7 to the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Hagerstown scored runs in five different innings to snap West Virginia's three game winning streak and regain a share of first place in the second half standings.
Matt Skole staked the Suns to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with his 23rd home run of the season, but the Power tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on an Alen Hanson triple, a run-scoring single by Ashley Ponce, and a groundout that brought home the second run.
Hagerstown recaptured the lead for good with a run in the third inning of West Virginia starter Mike Jefferson. The Suns added three runs on three hits and one West Virginia error in the top of the fourth for a 6-2 lead.
In the home half of the fifth inning, the Power plated three runs to pull within one at 6-5. Elias Diaz singled to start the inning, Hanson followed with a single, and Ponce reached on an error that allowed Diaz to score. With one out, Hanson scored on a wild pitch before Ponce scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Suns added two runs against Power reliever Joan Montero in the seventh for an 8-5 lead. Dan Gamache doubled in Jose Osuna in the bottom of the inning for an 8-6 deficit.
In the eighth, Hagerstown sealed the win with four runs off Rinku Singh, including two on a home run by Hendry Jimenez. West Virginia sent seven to the plate in the ninth, but only managed one run to end the scoring.
Jefferson (4-7) took the loss after surrendering six runs, five earned, on eight hits over five innings. Brian Rauh (1-1) earned the win despite allowing five runs over five innings. Colin Bates faced one batter with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck in the ninth for his third save.
Heading into play on Thursday, West Virginia and Hagerstown share first place with identical 22-18 records. Lakewood and Hickory are each one game back within the Northern Division. The Power will send Zack Von Rosenberg to the mound against the Suns Taylor Hill. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm at Appalachian Power Park.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 22-18
OVERALL RECORD: 45-65
