Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. (Aug. 1, 2012) -- Kannapolis jumped out to an early lead in the third inning and held on to win late, defeating the Hickory Crawdads, 4-3, on Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Crawdads put the winning run on base with one out in the ninth inning, but Max Peterson retired the final two batters to end the game and preserve the win.
Chris Curley broke a tie game with a two-run home run in the third inning, his seventh of the season, to give Kannapolis a 3-1 lead. Curley finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and matched Ross Wilson and Kevan Smith for the most home runs by an Intimidator this season.
Kyle Robinson added run-scoring single later in the third inning to put the Intimidators ahead 4-1. Hickory got a run back in the bottom of the third on a Drew Robinson groundout.
Intimidators starter Myles Jaye set a career-high with nine strikeouts over 5 and 2/3 innings of work, but his ninth -- a strikeout-wild pitch -- allowed a run to score, ending his night. Jeff Soptic came in to finish the sixth inning, stranding the tying run on second. Soptic has stranded 14 of 15 inherited runners on base this season.
Jaye (4-7) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits. Hickory starter Jerad Eickhoff (11-5) earned his first loss since May 19, allowing four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks. Peterson tossed the final 1 and 1/3 innings for Kannapolis to earn the save (3).
Kannapolis left seven runners on base over the final four innings, as the offense did not score after the third frame.
Joey DeMichele tripled with one out in the first inning, and Curley followed with a groundout to bring DeMichele home for a 1-0 lead. The Crawdads tied the game in the second inning on a Jorge Alfaro RBI- double.
Kannapolis and Hickory wrap up this four-game series on Thursday as Intimidators' RHP Bryan Blough (2-3, 3.13) faces Crawdads starter LHP Will Lamb (4-8, 4.91). The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Friday, Aug. 3 for a four-game series against the Rome Braves. Friday night the Intimidators are giving away seat cushions to the first 500 fans courtesy of Time Warner Cable.
