Lexington Legends News Release
(ASHEVILLE, N.C.) The Lexington Legends broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the seventh inning and made the lead stand up in a 3-2 win over the Asheville Tourists Wednesday night.
With one out in the seventh, Matt Duffy singled and moved to second on a single by Brandon Meredith. Nolan Fontana popped out for the second out, but a wild pitch by Asheville reliever Nelson Gonzalez allowed Duffy to score the first run of the game as Meredith advanced to second. Justin Gominsky doubled to left field, scoring Meredith. Jordan Scott hit a ground ball to first baseman Jordan Ribera, but Ribera's toss to Gonzalez went past first base for an error, allowing Gominsky to score from second and giving the Legends a 3-0 lead.
Asheville answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ribera and David Kandilas started the inning with singles, putting runners at first and third. Murilo Gouvea relieved Lexington starter Luis Cruz at that point, and Gouvea's wild pitch allowed Kandilas to move to second as Ribera held at third. Ribera scored on a ground out by Jose Rivera as Kandilas stayed at second. Trevor Story's single moved Kandilas to third, and Tyler Massey's sacrifice fly scored Kandilas to cut the Legends' lead to one at 3-2. Story was thrown out trying to advance to second after the run scored, ending the inning. The Tourists had only one baserunner after that. Kandilas reached on a catcher interference call with two outs in the ninth inning.
Cruz (8-5) worked into the seventh inning and got the win. He gave up six hits, struck out eight batters and walked two. Gouvea pitched through the eighth and Dayan Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 16th save.
Gonzalez (4-3), who relieved starter Ben Alsup with two outs in the sixth, took the loss. Alsup allowed one hit and no runs through five and two-thirds innings.
