
Gnats and Hoppers Split Wednesday

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats split a doubleheader with the Greensboro Grasshoppers Wednesday at Historic Grayson Stadium, winning the opener 5-2 and dropping the nightcap 1-0 in two seven-inning games. The Gnats and Hoppers finish their four-game set Thursday night.
In game two, the Grasshoppers (17-23/63-47) scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Carlos Vazquez. CF Brent Keys, the South Atlantic League's leading hitter, flipped a one-out single into left field to drive home C Tony Caldwell.
The Gnats (18-22/59-48) collected just four hits in the nightcap, squandering another strong outing from LHP Alex Panteliodis. The former Gator threw six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and one walk to lower his ERA to 3.20. Panteliodis has struck out 26 batters in his last 19 innings of work.
The 'Hoppers scored first in game one, tallying two runs in the top of the fourth inning against Savannah starter Michael Fulmer. C Wilfredo Gimenez drove home the second run with a RBI double into left.
The Gnats answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a four singles, which led to a three-run frame, to take a 3-2 lead. 3B Brian Harrison and LF Dustin Lawley each picked up RBI singles before RF Gregory Pron lifted a sacrifice fly to put the Gnats in front.
Fulmer, in his shortest start since May 25, lasted 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs, both earned on seven hits, walked two and struck out two.
The Gnats tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth of game one.
The Gnats and 'Hoppers finish their four-game series Thursday at 7:05 when Savannah will send LHP Jimmy Fuller (3-3, 7.13) to the mound against RHP Josh Hodges (6-7, 3.71). Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio broadcast, presented by Subway begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
