
Pittsburgh assistant GM in Wheeling for practice

Wheeling, WV-The Wheeling Nailers had an extra set of eyes watching practice today at WesBanco Arena. Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant General Manager, Ed Johnston, attended the morning workout. Johnston was in town to check on the Penguins prospects that will begin the season in Wheeling. The Nailers are in the final stages of preparation for their season opener Saturday at Trenton.
Johnston is in his ninth season as the Penguins' assistant general manger, working closely with GM Craig Patrick on all team-related matters. Johnston has spent 19 seasons with the Penguins in a variety of roles, including general manager, head coach and assistant coach. "EJ" is the winningest coach in franchise history.
Wheeling will open the season with six players who were taken in the NHL Entry Draft by Pittsburgh. Defenseman Alexandre Rouleau and Drew Fata were both taken in the third round in 2001; 2002-Defenseman Daniel Fernholm (4th round), Forward Cam Paddock (5th round), 2003-Defenseman Paul Bissonette (4th round), Goalie Andy Chiodo (7th round).
Four former Nailers began the year on the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton roster that played in Wheeling last year. The ECHL has had 263 alumni suit up in the NHL with Wheeling producing the most with 21.
The Wheeling Nailers home opener is Friday October 28th. The Opening Night Extravaganza will be a White Out Theme. All fans are asked to wear white in support of the Nailers against Reading.
