Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME â The Portland Pirates announced today that they have released left wing Mike Souza from his professional tryout. In 27 games with the Pirates, he had five goals and five assists for ten points. He scored the game-winning goal against Manchester on January 16, 2004. He also had 16 penalty minutes.
Souza began the season with the Florence Pride of the ECHL where he scored eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 17 games. He also had 29 penalty minutes. The native of Wakefield, Massachusetts split time last year between the Norfolk Admirals and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. Prior to that, he played two full seasons in Norfolk, each season earning 31 points. Prior to turning pro, Souza spent four years at the University of New Hampshire. While at New Hampshire, Souza and the Wildcats made the NCAA Tournament all four years including a runner-up appearance to the University of Maine in 1999. He was originally the Chicago Blackhawks' third pick, 67th overall, in 1997.
It's the second transaction for the Pirates in as many days. On Thursday, they released goaltender Scott Stirling who had been in Portland on loan from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Stirling returned to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the ECHL where he has played most of the season. In one appearance with the Pirates this year, the native of Hull, Massachusetts went 1-0-0, making 21 saves and allowing no goals in a 1-0 overtime win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on February 13, 2004.
The Pirates return to action tonight when they host the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m. It's a Margaritas Frozen Friday. Fans who dine at Margaritas will receive a handbill with their dinner check that's good for a buy one-get one free ticket to any Friday home game this season. On Saturday, the Pirates host the Manchester Monarchs at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,200 fans through the gates will receive a Crackers Bobblehead Doll courtesy of Hannaford Supermarkets. Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be ordered by phone at (207) 775-3458, (207) 775-3331 or on-line at Ticketmaster.com.
