Pina's Big Game Carries Hens in Series Finale
July 23, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens and IronPigs were back in action on Thursday evening in the final game of their four game set, as Toledo looked to even the series. On the mound for the Hens was Buck Farmer, the teams most reliable starter. However, Farmer faced some adversity headed into Thursday's game as the right hander was coming off a start in which he went just 1/3 of an inning against Indianapolis. The All-Star looked to get back on track against Lehigh Valley and send his team into Scranton with a victory.
The Hens jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double from Tyler Collins putting the team up 1-0. The Toledo lineup batted around in the second off Lehigh's Sean O' Sullivan as Manny Pina brought Dean Green around on an RBI single off his own, while Corey Jones followed suite with a knock to put the Hens up 3-0.
The IronPig offense showed fight as they tied the score up in the sixth when Aaron Altherr hit his fifth homer of the year. The Altherr long ball followed back to back innings in the third and fourth in which Lehigh brought around their first two runs. The Toledo offense took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth off Nefi Ogando, as the hottest hitter of the night, Manny Pina cashed in with runners in scoring position. The backstop hit a bases clearing double to the right field wall and comfortably extended the lead to 6-3. Pina finished the day 3-4 at the plate with four RBI.
Farmer's day ended after 6.0 innings, as he surrendered three runs on six hits in his bounce back start. Reliever Josh Zeid threw a scoreless seventh, followed by Angel Nesbitt who found himself in some trouble in the bottom of the ninth. The IronPigs put together four straight hits to start the inning off Nesbitt and turned it into three runs, as the Hens clinged to their 7-6 lead. Guido Knudson came on to extinguish the fire, retiring the final three IronPigs and picking up the save, his sixth of the season.
The Hens are back in action Friday night as they head to Scranton to take on the RailRiders. Mike Belfiore will take the ball, with the first pitch set for 7:05pm.
