Syracuse Mets News Release

Buffalo, NY (July 23, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the finale of a four-game series to the Buffalo Bisons, 3-1, Thursday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. For the fourth straight game, Buffalo held the lead after the first inning. The Bisons held on despite collecting just one hit in the final seven innings.

Buffalo (50-49) struck first, scoring its eighth first-inning run of the series. Dalton Pompey led off with a pop-up double off A.J. Cole that left fielder Ricky Hague lost in the sun. He was advanced to third on a groundout by Jon Berti. Two batters later, Alex Hassan doubled to left field to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. Buffalo outscored Syracuse 8-2 in the first inning in the series.

The Bisons would score runs in the third and fourth despite not getting a hit in either inning. In the third inning, Pompey walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a groundout from Matt Hague to push the lead to 2-0.

Melky Mesa scored in similar fashion in the fourth. He walked to start the inning and also stole second. Like Pompey, Mesa moved to third on a groundout. He scored on Sean Ochinko's sacrifice fly to give Buffalo a 3-0 lead.

Syracuse (39-61) grabbed its lone run in the fifth. Josh Johnson singled off Scott Copeland to lead off the inning. Trea Turner followed with a ground ball to second base. Munenori Kawasaki fielded, but his flip to try for the double play was dropped by shortstop Jonathan Diaz, allowing Turner to reach on Diaz's error. Two batters later, Jason Martinson singled to load the bases. Kevin Keyes then grounded out to first, scoring Johnson to get Syracuse on the board. Copeland recovered, however, striking out Hague to strand two runners and end the threat.

The Chiefs hit the road and open a three-game weekend series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Friday night in Allentown. Taylor Jordan is slated to start for Syracuse opposite Severino Gonzalez for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
