Rochester Red Wings News Release
Jose Berrios picked up his first Triple-A win, and Reynaldo Rodriguez had three hits to help the Rochester Red Wings beat the Gwinnett Braves 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field.
The Red Wings will return home to host the Syracuse Chiefs on Friday, July 31 with fireworks after the game; complete promotion details below...
Rookie right-hander Berrios opposed Gwinnett's Mike Foltynewicz, who made 12 appearances with Atlanta already this season. Berrios breezed through a nine-pitch first inning, but the Wings made Foltynewicz work a little harder. Oswaldo Arcia reached first on a fielding error with two outs, and Rodriguez followed with a double to the gap in left-center that brought Arcia all the way around for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.
Through three, Berrios had allowed two base runners, on a walk and an error. Eric Farris led off the bottom of the third with an infield base hit, continuing his hitting streak to seven games. A ground out by Carlos Paulino moved Farris over to second, putting him in scoring position. James Beresford's two-out single to right field scored Farris as he beat the throw to home. Coming into today's game, Beresford was hitting .349 with runners in scoring position and two outs. Unable to keep the momentum going, the Wings led the game 2-0 heading into the fourth inning.
Berrios gave up his first hit of the game to Gwinnett's Jose Peraza in the top of the fourth inning, followed up by a walk to Eric Young, Jr. Quality pitching by Berrios retired the next three batters on two po pouts and a strikeout, stranding Peraza and Young on base. A one-two-three inning for Foltynewicz left the game 2-0 Wings.
Foltynewicz walked Farris with one out in the bottom of the fifth, his first walk of the game. The next two batters, Paulino and Jorge Polanco, flew out to end the inning and leave Farris on first.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rodriguez recorded his second hit of the game--a two-out base hit to center field. Danny Ortiz connected on a 1-2 pitch and blasted a home run to left field, snapping an 0-for-15 hitless streak. Ortiz's home run is the 14th home run Foltynewicz has given up in his last 15 starts with Gwinnett. The Wings entered the seventh inning ahead of the Braves 4-0.
Berrios threw 12 pitches in the top of the seventh inning, retiring three Braves. Arcia made a diving play in right field on Daniel Castro's line drive to get the third out.
Argenis Diaz, who entered the game for Jose Martinez in the fifth inning, led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit to left center off of Braves reliever Vin Mazzaro. A double play by the Braves and a ground out ended the inning, leaving the game 4-0.
Foltynewicz's line: six innings pitched, five hits, four earned, one walk, and six strikeouts. He threw 108 pitches, 74 for strikes.
Berrios (1-0) took the mound for the Wings in the eighth to face the bottom of Gwinnett's lineup. He gave up a lead-off single to Jose Yepez and hit Barrett Kleinknecht with a pitch, ending his day. Caleb Thielbar came into the game to face lefty Mallex Smith and forced a pop fly that Beresford ran down and caught on the right field line. Thielbar did his job with four pitches, then Alex Meyer was called in. Meyer forced a pop fly to Arcia in right field and gave up a base hit to Young, moving the runners to second and third. With lefty Cedric Hunter coming to the plate, the Wings called Aaron Thompson from the bullpen to finish off the inning. On one pitch, Thompson forced a pop fly to right field to retire the side and strand the runners.
Berrios' line: seven innings, plus two batters in the eighth, four hits, two walks, and one strikeout. He threw 96 pitches, 61 for strikes, in his first Triple-A decision and win.
A.J. Achter worked the ninth inning, retiring the side in order with one strikeout. Berrios and the four relievers combined on the 11th shutout of the season, tops in the league.
NOTES: Eric Farris now has hits in 11 of his last 12 games...The Wings will play 18 of their next 21 games on the road, starting with a six-day trip to Columbus and Toledo beginning Friday night.
