Herd Wraps up Series with 3-1 Win
July 23, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
It was a game of small ball for the Bisons on Thursday afternoon. Buffalo would manage to score three runs and only three hits in the scorebook to wrap up their series against the Chiefs with a win 3-1.
Scott Copeland earned his seventh win of the season in a quality start on the mound for the Herd.
Dalton Pompey led off the first inning with a pop-up double that like an easy out for left fielder Ricky Hague, who lost the ball in the sun. Two batters later, Alex Hassan doubled to left field to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. Bisons' manager, Gary Allenson, took notice to the hustle play for the Herd's early lead. "No one usually hustles out of the box that looks like a routine out that falls in for a double. Then the two-out double by Hassan makes it 1-0 and we produced some runs."
The Bisons would add a run in the third and fourth innings without recording a hit in either inning. "For whatever opportunities we had, we made the most of it," said Allenson. Both runs were recorded from Dalton Pompey and Melky Mesa in similar fashion; a lead off walk, stolen base to second, ground out to advance to third and a fly out to drive in the runs.
Allenson summed up his starter's performance in one sentence, "Copeland did a super job." Copeland gave up one unearned run in the win pitching 6 2/3 innings. He managed to hold the Chiefs to six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Allenson took notice to the fact that his club scored three runs, only hitting the ball three times. "If we're gunna start getting back in this thing...and we are, we're going to have to string eight, nine, twelve hits in a game."
Buffalo will be on the road for the next seven days. The Herd starts off their road trip with a three-game series vs. the Pawtucket Red Sox, starting on Friday at 7:05.
BISONS NOTES:
Buffalo is over .500 for the first time since June 1st when they were 26-25...The Bisons announced on Thursday that they activated LHP Jeff Francis off the temporarily inactive list and RHP Bobby Korecky had been placed on the DL.
