Tides' Comeback Tops Pawtucket 5-4

July 23, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Dariel Alvarez hit a go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the seventh inning, capping Norfolk's comeback in a 5-4 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox in front of 8,455 fans Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Henry Urrutia ignited the game-winning rally with a one-out double to center field off of Pawsox reliever Jonathan Aro (0-1). Rey Navarro followed with an infield single to put runners on first and third, and one batter later Alvarez lined a double down the left field line, plating both Urrutia and Navarro and giving Norfolk a 5-4 lead.

The Tides had trailed the contest 4-0 after one inning, as the Pawsox sent eight men to the plate against Norfolk starter Tyler Wilson (4-5) in the opening frame. Wilson settled down after the rocky first, as he faced just one batter over the minimum over his next six innings - including retiring 14 straight at one point - to pick up the victory. Wilson yielded five hits and two walks while striking out five as he helped Norfolk (56-41) improve to a season-high 15 games over .500.

Cesar Cabral worked a scoreless eighth in relief of Wilson, and Pedro Beato pitched a scoreless ninth to register his 10th save of the season.

Christian Walker began Norfolk's comeback efforts in the third inning, as he belted a two-run double off of Pawtucket starter Henry Owens to pull the Tides within 4-2. Walker has now hit safely in seven consecutive games, over which he's hit .387 (12-31) with four home runs, four doubles and 13 runs batted in.

With the win, Norfolk picked up a four-game sweep of the Pawsox for the first time since August 28-31, 1995, when Norfolk won four consecutive games at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. The Tides had not swept a four-game home series from the Red Sox since 1975, when the Tidewater Tides swept a series at Metropolitan Park.

The Tides welcome the Durham Bulls to Harbor Park on Friday for the start of a four-game, three day series, with first pitch slated for 6:05. Friday will feature two games, with the first game being the conclusion of a game originally suspended on July 3 with the score tied 0-0 in the fifth inning. Game two will be a seven-inning contest, with Zach Davies (3-6, 3.02) making the start for Norfolk against left-hander Blake Snell, who will be making his Triple-A debut.

The first 5,000 fans through the Harbor Park gates on Friday will receive a Tides camouflage baseball cap, courtesy of your local Ford dealers, WTKR NewsChannel 3 and WGNT27.
