Charlotte Knights News Release

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte starter Erik Johnson allowed just one run over seven innings -- a solo home run to Jayson Nix in the seventh inning -- and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs beat the Charlotte Knights 1-0 on Saturday in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,508. The Knights managed four hits on the evening and lost for just the second time on the seven-game homestand.

Johnson (4-4, 4.14) was sharp over his first six innings - allowing just five hits and no runs while the game remained scoreless. In the top of the seventh frame, Cord Phelps led things off with a single. Johnson then erased the hit by getting Chris McGuiness to line into a 6-3 double play. Nix then followed things up with the solo home run - his first of the season. At that point, the Knights were down by just one run, but Lehigh Valley's Anthony Vasquez was impressive.

Vasquez (2-1, 2.51) allowed just three hits over eight shutout innings en-route to his second win of the season. Vasquez walked just two batters and struck-out five on the evening. 'Pigs manager Dave Brundage handed the ball to Dustin McGowan in the ninth and the Knights made things interesting.

Charlotte entered the game with five walk-off wins on the season, and battled back in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday. Leury Garcia started things off with a single to put the tying run on base. Micah Johnson then followed with a sacrifice bunt, which moved Garcia into scoring position with just one out. After a Tyler Saladino groundout, Neftali Soto stepped in.

Soto battled in his eight-pitch at-bat. During his time at the plate, Garcia moved up to third base on a wild pitch from McGowan. Now, with the tying run just 90 feet away, Lehigh Valley's reliever was able to get Soto to fly out to Jordan Danks to end the game. McGowan earned his fourth save of the season.

Danks, the all-time hits leader in Charlotte Knights franchise history, had two of Lehigh Valley's eight hits on the night.

Charlotte reliever Onelki Garcia allowed one hit over two scoreless frames -- striking-out three batters on the evening.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 2:05 p.m. game at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Scott Carroll will make his first start since being optioned back to the Knights from the Chicago White Sox. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. and Sundays are Sunbelt Family Sundays presented by Sunbelt Rentals. Kids can Run the Bases after the game presented by Academy Sports & Outdoors. Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba! will also be on hand to meet fans.
