Nix's Blast Lifts Pigs over Knights, 1-0
May 30, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Jayson Nix's solo shot in the top of the seventh proved to be the only offense the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (20-31) would need in a 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights (28-21) on Saturday.
The Knights were able to get the tying run to third with two outs in the ninth, but Lehigh Valley RHP Dustin McGowan (1.0 IP, H) got Neftali Soto to fly to center and end the game to notch his fourth save of the season.
It was the first shutout of the year for the Pigs and their first shutout since blanking the Columbus Clippers by a score of 4-0 on August 11, 2014.
IronPigs LHP Anthony Vasquez and Knights RHP Erik Johnson traded zeroes through the first six innings before Nix (2-3, HR, RBI, R) broke through for the Pigs with the solo blast in the top of the seventh.
The home run was the first of the season for the Dallas, Texas native.
Vasquez (2-1) allowed just three hits over eight shutout innings to go along with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. 8.0 IP marks the longest outing for the southpaw since he tossed eight on August 21, 2014 with Bowie (AA) in the Orioles organization.
Johnson (4-4) gave up just the one run on seven hits while walking one and fanning six but was dealt the loss for Charlotte.
Jordan Danks (2-4) also had a multi-hit game for the IronPigs, who collected eight hits on the night.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. as a pitcher TBD for the Pigs will battle Knights RHP Scott Carroll (1-1, 2.45). This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
