Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS -- The Sioux Falls Pheasants had superb pitching and just enough offense to inch out a 3-2, extra-innings over the Quebec Capitales Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Pheasants (33-38) took three of four from Quebec to win their first ever interleague series against a CanAm League foe.
Barry Fowler turned in a quality start, and four Pheasants relievers combined to shut out Quebec over the final six innings before Cory Morales' game-winning single brought home the Al Quintana in the bottom of the 12th inning.
"We played hard, gave it everything we had," said Pheasants manager Steve Shirley. "We finally got the big hit by Morales and tremendous effort by Al [Quintana] to get in to score."
The Pheasants won in walk-off fashion for the second time in the series.
Quebec grabbed an early lead when the first five batters reached base in the second inning. Steve Brown's two-RBI double gave the Capitales the 2-0 advantage.
The Pheasants tied it up with singletons in the third and sixth innings. Joe Anthonsen singled and scored on Jared Bolden's groundout in the third, and Reggie Abercrobmie triple home Bolden in the sixth.
Pheasants starter Barry Fowler exited after the sixth inning but took care of the Capitales after the rough second inning. He earned a no-decision in his first start of the season, hurling six strong innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking two.
The bullpen was strong for the Pheasants as Jack Van Leur, Kyle Mertins, Alan DeRatt and Dusty Gober (1-2) combined to blank the Capitales in the final six innings. Gober earned the win. He pitched the twelfth inning allowing one hit and a walk.
"It was an excellent effort by the whole pitching staff," said Shirley. "Fowler started it with an excellent start, and sometimes you don't have adjectives to describe situations like this. We had to have great performances and we got them from everybody."
The bullpen has allowed one one earned run in the last 23 1/3 innings across six games, and just two earned runs in the last 28 2/3 innings over the last nine games.
The Pheasants squandered a couple of opportunities to close it out before the twelfth inning, but left four on base in the ninth and 10th innings. Guillaume Leduc (1-3) suffered the loss, tossing the final 2 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits.
"The guys played hard all night, and it was a tough battle against a good team," said Shirley. "We had some opportunities earlier, but there was never any quit in us."
The Pheasants have won four of their last six games and are 8 1/2 games back in the wild card race with 29 games remaining in the season.
The Pheasants begin a three-game series against the Wichita at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, August 3 at Sioux Falls Stadium. Friday Night Fireworks follows the game, sponsored by Sanford Health and All-Star Fireworks.
"Kids FREE" also continues. With the purchase of an adult ticket ($12 seating), two tickets for children 12-and-under are free.
