
Saints Derailed by Seven Run Sixth in 8-3 Loss to Gary

GARY, IN - The St. Paul Saints didn't have an answer in the sixth inning for the team that is tied for last in the American Association in batting average, giving up six runs to the Gary SouthShore Railcats, as they lost 8-3 on Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
With the Saints leading 2-1 in the sixth the Railcats unloaded on Saints starting pitcher Kyle Ruwe. Mike Coles got it started with a single to center. Craig Maddox singled to right advancing Coles to third, but Maddox was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. Kenny Bryant, making his professional debut, singled home Coles tying the game at two. Brian Kolb doubled and Zac Mitchell was intentionally walked to load the bases. Chris Carrara cleared the bases with a double giving the Railcats a 5-2 lead. After a walk to David Cooper Adam Klein doubled home a run and Mike Massaro followed with a sacrifice fly making it 7-2 The final run of the inning scored on a single by Bryant to give the Railcats an 8-2 lead. Bryant finished the night 3-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Saints starter Ruwe went 7.0 innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 14 hits while walking three and striking out one. He threw 134 pitches and gave way to catcher Benji Johnson, who pitched 1.0 shutout inning of relief.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Jim Rapoport led off the game with a double and scored when the next hitter, Adam Frost, singled him home.
In the bottom of the first the Railcats tied it when Mike Massaro hit his league leading 11th triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Coles.
The Saints took their last lead of the game in the fourth when Jose Hernandez singled and moved to third on a single by Tanner Townsend. Durham's sacrifice fly scored Hernandez to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
The same two teams will meet in game two of the four game series on Saturday night at 6:10 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (5-2, 6.23) to the mound against Railcats RHP Alberto Rolon (2-4, 7.64). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
