GARY, Ind. - Chris Carrara hit a go-ahead three-run double in the RailCats' seven-run sixth inning on their way to an 8-3 win over St. Paul in the series opener on Friday night at U. S. Steel Yard. There were 4,763 fans on hand to watch the RailCats improve to 32-40.
The RailCats trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. Mike Coles led off with a single and Craig Maddox also singled but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Kenny Bryant, making his professional debut, lined a single to center to score Coles and tie the game at two. Brain Kolb doubled and Zac Mitchell was intentionally walked to load the bases for Carrara, who delivered a bases-clearing three-run double to put the RailCats in front 5-2. Adam Klein followed with an RBI double and Massaro hit a sac fly to make it 7-2. Maddox then reached on an error, scoring Klein and giving the 'Cats an 8-2 lead.
The RailCats sent 12 men to the plate in the inning, and had a season-high eight hits in the frame.
Jim Rapaport led off the game for the Saints with a double down the left field line. Adam Frost grounded the next pitch up the middle and into center for a single to score Rapaport and put the Saints ahead 1-0.
The RailCats answered quickly in the bottom of the first, as Mike Massaro hit his American Association-leading 11th triple of the season. He is tied for the all-time American Association record with 27 triples. Mike Coles scored Massaro with a sac fly to tie the game at one.
The Saints took the lead in the fourth as Jose Hernandez and Tanner Townsend hit back-to-back singles and Miles Durham hit a sac fly to make it 2-1, a lead they would hold until the RailCats' big sixth inning.
Will Krout (3-4) held the Saints to two runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings for the victory. He struck out five in his fifth quality start of the season. Saints starter Kyle Ruwe (0-1) gave up eight runs, seven earned on 14 hits in seven frames.
Game two of the four-game series is on Saturday at 6:10. Alberto Rolon (2-4, 7.63) will start on the mound in his RailCats debut. It is Chicago Sports Night and there will be a RailCats baseball giveaway to the first 500 kids.
