SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants jumped out to an early lead and hung out to beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 7-4 in a rain shortened game in front of 1,025 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium Monday night.

One pitch into the bottom of the sixth inning the umpires declared a rain delay, which lasted nearly an hour before the game was officially called.

Francisco Leandro cleared the bases with a double in the bottom of the third inning to give the Pheasants a 3-0 lead.

The Saltdogs pulled to within a run on a two-out, two-run home run from Maikel Jova in the top of the fourth inning but Sioux Falls then added two runs in each of the next two trips to the plate.

Trailing 7-2 in the top of the sixth, Phil Hawke drove a two-run double into the gap in left center to cut the deficit to three but the Saltdogs could not get closer, stranding two runners in scoring position.

Chris Salberg (1-3) threw six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one to earn the win. Lindsay Gulin (1-4) lasted five innings, allowing seven runs - five earned - on nine hits to suffer the loss.

The teams meet Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. for game two of the four-game series. John James (2-1, 8.78) is scheduled to pitch for the Saltdogs against Brad Stone (1-2, 5.00) for the Pheasants. Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
