St. Paul Saints News Release
AMARILLO, TX (May 31, 2011) - Perhaps it's only fitting that a man named Pope single- handedly beat the St. Paul Saints on Tuesday night at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium as Van Pope had a big game and the Saints lost 12-4 to the Amarillo Sox.
After the Saints put up three runs in the first the Sox picked up where they left off the night before and scored 11 unanswered runs and of their 12 total runs, nine came with two outs. Pope went 3-4, finishing a triple shy of the cycle with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Adam Frost and Justin Snyder reached on back-to-back singles. With one out Jason Cooper knocked in a run with an RBI single to make it 1-0. With two outs Ronnie Bourquin doubled home two.
The Sox wasted little time in answering back scoring two in the bottom of the first as Fehlandt Lentini walked and, with one out, Cyle Hankerd homered, his second of the season to make it 3-2 Saints.
The Sox took the lead for good in the third as they sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs with two outs. After Lentini reached on a two base throwing error by Saints pitcher Kyle Zaleski, the next two guys struck out, but as the Sox proved they had the Saints right where they wanted them. Lee Cruz was intentionally walked and Benji Johnson doubled home a run to tie the game at three. Pope then singled home two and two batters later Adam de la Garza tripled home two to make it 7-3.
In the fourth, after a double play, the Sox would load the bases with two outs on two walks and a single. Pope then walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-3 and a fielding error by Bourquin on a ball hit by Chris Nash allowed another run to score to make it 9-3.
The Sox finished up their runs with two outs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Hankerd and Cruz.
The Saints got their last run on a solo homer from Jonathan Van Every, his sixth of the season, in the eighth.
The same two teams play Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. in game three of the four game series. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (1-0, 3.38) against Sox RHP Ryan Mitchell (1-1, 3.09). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
