SHREVEPORT, La.---The Captains broke open a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth with a six-run inning then held off a late El Paso rally in the top of the ninth to beat the Diablos 10-6.
The Captains scored in the first on a bases loaded walk to Uriak Marquez, whick scored Robert Perry. Bases-on-balls were a recurring theme for the Captains, as El Paso pitchers walked 11 batters. The Diablos would take the lead briefly with two in the third. Butch Ballez came in to score on an Antoin Gray double play ground ball and Adam Deleo hit an RBI single to make it 2-1.
Shreveport-Bossier would get it back in the bottom of the frame with three runs, one on a Palmer Karr Jr. RBI single and two more on a two-run double by Marquez. El Paso would make it a one-run game in the fifth on a Gray RBI single scoring Chad Gabriel, who went four-for-five on the night.
The score would stay 4-3 until the Captains erupted for six runs in the eighth. Seven straight Captains batters reached base and six scored. The inning was puncuated by a two-run double for Bryan Sabatella and another by Joe Urtuzuastegui.
In the ninth, Captains outfielder Alex Cowart came in to pitch, making his second appearance of the year. Cowart retired just one batter and allowed three runs on three hits, departing with the bases loaded and the score 10-5. Closer Dan Griffin allowed a bases loaded walk to Martin Parra to make it 10-6 but settled down to retire Kory Drew on a strikeout and Albenis Machado on a fly out to center.
