RailCats Plate Seven Unanswered in Comeback Win

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Gary SouthShore RailCats stopped a three-game losing streak by rallying from a 4-0 deficit to post a 7-4 win over the Sioux City Explorers in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

For the second consecutive night, Sioux City jumped on the board in the first inning, recording a pair of runs against RailCats starter Jack Frawley. The X's collected singles from Dustin Jones and Derek Schermerhorn to open the game. Both were sacrificed over. The first run scored on a groundout and Kent Sakamoto made it 2-0 with a two-out single.

The X's put two more on the board in the second to leap in front 4-0. The first run scored on a double play and Schermerhorn knocked in the second. The RailCats began to rally in the top of the third. Mike Rohde drew a leadoff walk from Sioux City starter David Trahan. Mike Valadez and Chris Carrara followed with singles to load the bases. Rohde scored the first run on a double play.

Just one hit was needed to even the score in the top of the fifth. Toddric Johnson led off with a walk and reached second when Rohde reached on an error. Adam Klein walked after working the count full and Mike Massaro made the X's pay for the error, clearing the bases with a double into the right-center gap to tie the game.

The contest remained even until the 10th. Craig Maddox drew a walk from Sioux City reliever Matt Gibbs to open the inning. Carrara followed by showing bunt but slapping a single past the charging third baseman. Klein put the 'Cats in front for the first time with an RBI single to right after showing bunt. Massaro followed by knocking in his fourth run of the game with another single. The final run crossed on a double play.

Chris Chavez posted the win, throwing two perfect innings to improve to 2-0 on the year. Frawley scratched his way through a six-inning outing, keeping the RailCats in the game. Manager Greg Tagert and Catcher Mike Valadez were ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the seventh. Prior to the game, the RailCats placed infielder Kyle Haines on the Disabled List and activated Infielder Brian Kolb.

The four game series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. with the third game. The RailCats will send RHP Nolan Nicholson (0-3, 8.22) to the hill. Sioux City counters with RHP Nick Schumacher (1-2, 2.45), who ranks seventh in the American Association in ERA.
