May 31 Recap

Winnipeg 5, Fargo-Moorhead 1 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Kody Kaiser hit two home runs, and the Winnipeg pitching staff held its own Tuesday evening, paving the way for a 5-1 Goldeyes win. Kaiser's second homer, a three-run fifth-inning blast, gave Winnipeg its final winning margin. Starting Goldeyes pitcher C Salamida threw five innings, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Kaiser's two hits represented half of the Goldeyes' hit total, as Fargo-Moorhead pitchers held two-thirds of the Winnipeg lineup hitless.

Fargo-Moorhead 9, Winnipeg 4 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

Fargo-Moorhead took game two of Tuesday's doubleheader with Winnipeg. And - save for a four-run Winnipeg third - did it will relative ease. The RedHawks scored eight of their nine runs by the fourth inning, leaning heavily on LF Jason James, who went 3-4 with a run and three RBI. RedHawks starting pitcher Zach Ward earned the win with a five-inning performance in which he surrendered four runs on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts.

Wichita 6, Fort Worth 2

The Wingnuts sped off to a 6-0 lead after three innings, plating three runs apiece in the second and third. And the Wichita pitching staff more than held its own, leaving the Wingnuts with a four-run home win against Fort Worth. Wichita LF Mike Conroy plated three runs and scored one of his own on a 2-3 night, while 1B Jorge Delgado hit his second home run of the season to highlight a 3-4 performance. The Cats got a two-run double from RF Marcos Rodriguez in the fifth, but the scoring stopped there. Wichita starting pitcher Justin Murray earned the win, going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks with one strikeout.

Amarillo 12, St. Paul 4

Sox 3B Van Pope was the brightest of several stars Tuesday night for Amarillo, batting in four runs and scoring twice to bolster an already impressive 3-4 night. In addition to Pope, the Sox got three RBI from RF Cyle Hankerd and two from DH Adam De La Garza, who each picked up two hits. Amarillo starting pitcher Justin Garcia bounced back from a difficult first inning, in which he surrendered three Saints runs, sitting down 19 of the final 25 Saints batters he faced en route to his second win of the season. Garcia finished his seven-inning game allowing three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Saints 3B Ronnie Bourquin went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the St. Paul offense.

Gary SouthShore 7, Sioux City 4 (10 innings)

Nine innings wasn't enough Tuesday for Gary SouthShore and Sioux City. But a leadoff walk in the 10th for the RailCats gave the club just the opening it needed, and two singles and an RBI putout later, Gary SouthShore held a three-run lead that Sioux City couldn't catch. The second RBI single in the 10th came off the bat of CF Mike Massaro, who went 2-5 with four RBI in the game. RailCats relief pitcher Chris Chavez pitched perfect ninth and 10th frames, earning his second win of the season, while striking out three Sioux City batters. Sioux City sprinted out to a 4-0 lead after two, successfully playing small ball. But that was all the scoring the Explorers could muster.

Lincoln 20, Sioux Falls 5

Scoring 11 total runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the SaltDogs erased a lead Sioux Falls earned just one frame earlier and never looked back. Lincoln C Robby Alcombrack sent the ball over the outfield wall twice Tuesday night, including a three-run dinger in Lincoln's six-run fifth inning, to highlight a 2-4 night. Alcombrack now has three home runs on the season. Sioux Falls 1B Brandon Sing fell a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-4 with a two-run homer in the third inning that his club a 4-1 lead. But Alcombrack and the SaltDogs powered past Sioux Falls from that point on to take the 15-run win.

Grand Prairie 5, Kansas City 2

Pheasants DH John Alsonso gave a rather unfriendly welcome to Kansas City relief pitcher Kyle Dahman in the seventh inning. Behind in the count, 1-2, Alsonso ultimately gave Grand Prairie its first lead of the game on a two-run blast off the barely warmed-up Dahman. The Pheasants added a run in the eighth to earn the three-run win. Alsonso went 3-5 in the game, scoring twice and batting in three runs. Grand Prairie starting pitcher Josh Rainwater picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. Kansas City 2B Fernando Garcia scored once on a 2-3 night.

Shreveport-Bossier 10, El Paso 6

The Diablos put three runs on the board in the late innings but couldn't catch Shreveport-Bossier, falling, 10-6. Captains Bryan Sabatella went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Justin Young pitched three innings in relief for the Captains, allowing 2 runs on four hits, one walk and a strikeout to earn his first win of the season. Diablos LF Chad Gabriel went 4-5 with two runs.
