Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, LA.---Ryan DiPietro improved to 4-0, pitching seven quality innings allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out six as the Captains snapped their three game losing streak with an 8-2 win over the El Paso Diablos at Fair Grounds Field.

Palmer Karr Jr. hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning, off Diablos starter David Whigham (2-2), while Bryan Sabatella went 4-for4 with two runs batted in and lead off hitter Robert Perry went two-for-three, reaching base safely in all five plate appearances.

The Captains won for just the second time all year when their opponent scores first. After loading the bases with no outs, the Captains failed to score in the first and El Paso took the lead on a Butch Ballez RBI double in the second. But Shreveport-Bossier would take the lead in the second with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Brian Peterson, Sabatella and Andres Rodriguez, who extended his hit streak to 14 games.

The Captains made it 5-1 in the fifth when Peterson scored Mike Provencher on a sacrifice fly and Sabatella and Rodriguez again hit RBI singles. El Paso would score their second and final run in the sixth on a RBI single by Antoin Gray.

Jake McCarter relieved DiPietro in the eighth, allowing a lead off single to Chad Gabriel but retiring the next three Diablos hitters in order. In the ninth, Shreveport-Bossier turned the game over to Dan Griffin in a non-save situation. The Captains closer, who hadn't worked in three days, allowed a lead off walk, but struck out two of the last three hitters he faced, including short stop Albenis Machado to end the game.

The Captains and Diablos play game two of their six game set on Tuesday, May 31 at 7:05 p.m. on Captain Morgan's & Maker's Mark Twofer Tuesday. Gates open at 6:05 p.m.
