Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Jakub Petruzalek picked up right where he left off last season as one of the thorns in the side of the Sound Tigers, as he scored a goal and three assists in the Albany River Rats' 5-3 win over the Sound Tigers. Jason Pitton and James Sixsmith both finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Sound Tigers in their first preseason game of the 2008-09 season.
Despite the loss, the Sound Tigers jumped on the board first when Mike Walsh set-up an easy tap-in goal for James Sixsmith. Walsh skated into the River Rats' zone along the left boards, dropped his shoulder and shielded the Albany defenseman from the puck. As he came around the goal, Walsh fed a pass across the crease to Sixsmith at the back door where he snapped the puck past Albany starting goalie, David Leggio for his first goal of the preseason. Sixsmith's goal came about six minutes into the first period. Defenseman Jon Gleed would make it 2-0 in favor of the Sound Tigers five minutes later when he intercepted a clearing attempt and backhanded a shot through Leggio's legs. Andy Sertich and Jason Pitton had the assists on Gleed's first tally of the preseason.
In the second period, the River Rats would get on the board half-way through when Nicolas Blanchard scored his first marker of the preseason while on the power-play. Matt Murley and Jonathan Paiement assisted on the goal. Yannick Tifu would tie and then give Albany the lead with two goals coming 6:26 apart. Jakub Petruzalek assisted on both Tifu's first two tallies of the preseason.
Albany would receive two more goals in the third period off the sticks of Petruzalek, his first of the preseason, and Blanchard, his second of the game to make the score 5-2 River Rats. Pitton would score at the 14:45 mark of the final period on assists from Sixsmith and Reagan Leslie but it wasn't enough as Albany beat the Sound Tigers 5-3.
Nathan Lawson started in goal for the Sound Tigers and stopped all 24 of the shots he faced throughout the first half of the game. Michael Mole came in for Lawson and stopped 15 of the 20 shots he faced. Leggio earned the victory turning aside 19 of the 22 shots he faced. The Sound Tigers finished 1-for-10 on the man-advantage and were 9-for-12 on the penalty-kill.
The Sound Tigers will return home tonight and return to their normal practice sessions at The Rinks at Shelton tomorrow. Friday, the Sound Tigers will play their first home game of the preseason against the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, CT. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, the Lowell Devils will come to The Rinks at Shelton to take on the Sound Tigers at 7 p.m. The Islanders I.C.E. Tour will attend and throw a barbeque prior to the match-up. They will also have their inflatables set-up for kids to play on and several Sound Tiger players will sign autographs and take pictures.
