Syracuse, NY (October 2, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch defeated the Rochester Americans tonight, 5-2 at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

The Crunch jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period on a shorthanded goal from John Hughes. Hughes was sprung on a breakaway by Ryan Garlock, sped in on Rochester starter Chris Beckford-Tseu and banked a wrister off the post that trickled over the goal line.

As the second frame got underway, Rochester tied the game at 1-1 just 3:30 in on the power play. Mark Lee deflected a Dominic D'Amour point shot past Crunch starter Dan LaCosta.

Syracuse answered just under six minutes later, again shorthanded. Trevor Frischmon chipped the puck up ice to a streaking Petr Pohl. Pohl corralled the puck with a defender on him, made a quick cut to his left, stopped short and fired a bullet over the left shoulder of Beckford-Tseu for a 2-1 Crunch lead.

The Crunch went up 3-1 with just 26 seconds remaining in the second stanza. Steve Kelly won a battle for the puck in the corner and centered a pass for Kirill Starkov. Starkov turned and slid a shot past David Shantz who replaced Beckford-Tseu low to the stick side.

Syracuse stretched their lead to 4-1 just over one minute into the third frame when Starkov notched his second of the game by redirecting a centering feed from John Vigilante past Shantz.

The Crunch took a 5-1 lead when Kyle Wharton's wrister from the point found its way through Shantz at the 4:35 mark of the period.

Jacob Micflickier added a goal for the Amerks with just over one minute left in regulation to make it a 5-2 final.

The Crunch head to the Oswego State Campus Center Ice Arena tomorrow night to take on Binghamton in the second annual Shapiro Motor Sales of Oswego Classic for the second of three preseason match-ups.

CRUNCHABLES: Frischmon, Kelly and Dan Smith all wore an 'A' as alternate captains...LaCosta had 25 saves on 27 shots.
