Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Despite a dominant debut outing from Williams Perez, the Tacoma Rainiers (41-37) fell to the Las Vegas 51s (34-44) by a final score of 3-2 Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium.
Perez tossed six scoreless innings, allowed just four hits and struck out five Las Vegas hitters during his Tacoma debut.
Rainiers relievers Ashton Goudeau (1.0) and Ryan Cook (1.0) tossed a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen to emphasize another strong day on the mound for Tacoma pitchers.
Catcher David Freitas (2x4, 2B) center fielder Ian Miller (1x4, R, 3B) and first baseman Gordon Beckham (0x2, RBI, BB) led the way for the Rainiers offense.
Miller led off the bottom of the fifth with a line-drive triple to center field and came around to score when Beckham launched a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0 Tacoma.
The 51s tied the game in the top of the eighth when Zach Borenstein lifted a sacrifice fly to center and took the lead when Patrick Kivlehan doubled to right field to score Jeff McNeil and make it 2-1 Las Vegas. Ty Kelly's ensuing groundout pushed the 51s' advantage to 3-1.
Freitas grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the eighth to pull the Rainiers within one at 3-2.
The Rainiers and 51s return to action Wednesday morning at 11:35 a.m. for game three of the current four-game series. Right hander Casey Lawrence (6-2, 2.37) will get the start for Tacoma and righty Corey Oswalt (4-4, 5.32) will be on the bump for Las Vegas.
