Iowa Cubs News Release
METAIRIE, LA - In game two of a four-game set down south, the Iowa Cubs (27-49) were edged by the New Orleans Baby Cakes (37-40) in a 3-1 loss on Tuesday night at the Shrine on Airline.
Despite the loss, the Cubs got a quality start from RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (L, 2-9), who gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings of quality work. Tseng did not walk a batter and threw 65 strikes on 99 pitches. Over his last two starts, the Cubs No. 9 prospect has given up three or fewer runs while spinning at least five innings in each start.
Aside from Tseng, the Cubs got two innings of scoreless relief from RHP Preston Morrison in his second Triple-A appearance. Morrison gave up just two hits while striking out one batter without issuing a walk.
By giving up just three runs, the Iowa pitching staff has now given up four or fewer runs in six straight games and five runs or fewer in nine consecutive games.
Offensively, the Cubs got their only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by infielder Chesny Young. The single brought home outfielder Wynton Bernard, who came through with a one-out triple to start the rally and paced the Iowa offense with two hits.
In addition to the performances from Young and Bernard, the I-Cubs also got hits from infielder Jason Vosler and catcher Taylor Davis. The single for Vosler in the second inning was his first Triple-A hit in his second game with the Cubs.
New Orleans scored their first run in the third inning on a RBI single from infielder Eric Campbell and their final two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by outfielder Garrett Cooper. All three runs for the Baby Cakes came with two outs.
Odrisamer Despaigne (W, 2-1) picked up the victory by spinning 5.1 innings of scoreless relief after starter Pablo Lopez exited the game with two outs in the third inning. Righty Javy Guerra (S, 4) secured the victory for the Baby Cakes with a scoreless ninth inning.
Iowa and New Orleans play the third of the four games at the Shrine on Airline tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. CT. Follow the action on www.iowacubs.com, AM 940, or MiLB.TV.
