State College Spikes News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Juan Perez and Landon Beck teamed up to strike out 13 batters and shut out the Hudson Valley Renegades on seven hits, giving the State College Spikes a 2-0 victory on Friday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Perez (4-1), the reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week, started and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over five innings for the win. The righty has now thrown 12 straight scoreless innings, and set down 17 batters on strikes during that time.

With Thursday's 14-inning marathon against Aberdeen taxing the bullpen, Beck (1) then took over in a makeshift "piggyback" setup on the mound and went the rest of the way. The Anderson University product, who was originally set to start Saturday's game against Hudson Valley (18-15), yielded four hits and struck out six over four innings of work for the save.

The Spikes (16-17) plated both of their runs in the opening frame. Mike Pritchard and Thomas Spitz rapped back-to-back one-out singles to set the table. After a groundout advanced them to second and third, both scored on an error to give State College the lead that Perez and Beck would make sure stood up.

Spitz was the only Spike with multiple hits in the game.

Hudson Valley starter Angel Yepez (2-1) took the loss after yielding both runs, which were unearned, on a total of five hits over six innings. Yepez struck out three batters in the effort. Renegades reliever Tim Ingram tossed three scoreless frames, giving up just one hit and facing the minimum while striking out three batters.

The game, which took two hours, 11 minutes, was the Spikes' shortest nine-inning game of the 2015 season, one night after playing four hours, 38 minutes against Aberdeen in the second-longest game in franchise history.

State College will meet Hudson Valley on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game set at Dutchess Stadium. After the rotation shuffle, right-hander Carson Cross (1-1) will now get the start for the Spikes. The Renegades are slated to send right-hander Benton Moss (1-0) to the mound.

After the weekend series against Hudson Valley and an off day on Monday, the Spikes will return home on Tuesday, July 28 to begin a six-game string at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Vermont and Lowell will be the opposition during the stretch.
