Auburn Doubledays News Release
LOWELL, MA - The Doubledays took game one of the series against the Spinners thanks to timely hitting and multiple errors on Lowell's defense by the score of 6-2.
For the second straight night, Auburn took the lead when Victor Robles led off the game. The 18-year-old launched his second homer with the Doubledays this season and second leadoff homer in as many days to give Auburn a 1-0 lead.
The very next inning in the second, the Doubledays struck again. With one out, Kelvin Gutierrez doubled into deep center field. The third baseman later moved to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the Doubledays up 2-0.
After a scoreless third and fourth for both sides, the Spinners struck in the fifth. Austin Rei led off with a double and came around to score on a single to right from Hector Lorenzana. Three batters later with two outs, Lorenzana scored on an error by Gutierrez off the bat of Jeremy Rivera to tie the game up at two.
But the tie didn't last long. In the top of the sixth, the Doubledays struck quickly. Max Schrock singled into center with one out and then came around to score on a double to left by Gutierrez. On the very same play, Lowell's left fielder and shortstop both committed errors that allowe Gutierrez to touch every base on his double and give the Doubledays a 4-2 lead. After Ian Sagdal struck out, Jakson Reetz dug in an doubled to right. Reetz scored when the next batter Luis Guzman reached on an error by the first baseman Tucker Tubbs that sailed into right.
After a scoreless seventh and eighth, the Spinners were down to their final three outs in the ninth. Rei and Lorenzana both reached on errors to start the frame before Rei was brought in on a double by Jordan Austin. With the Austin on second representing the tying run, Mariano Rivera III struck out Jeremy Rivera and forced Tate Matheny to lineout to end the ball game and preserve the 5-3 win.
