Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BATAVIA, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats dropped the first game of a three-game road series against the Batavia Muckdogs 8-6 at Dwyer Stadium on Friday night, despite a late rally that cut an early seven run deficit to two.

The Muckdogs rode an early offensive surge to a 7-0 lead, scoring once in the first inning, twice in the second, once in the third, and three times in the bottom of the fourth. Their pitching also kept the ValleyCats in check, as Batavia starting pitcher Scott Squier entered the fifth inning without allowing a hit.

However, Pat Porter put an end to the shutout and no-hit bid in the top of the fifth with a one-out triple to right field, before scoring on a wild pitch.

He put the 'Cats on the board again in the top of the seventh, driving home Anthony Hermelyn with a double, then scoring on a single by Johnny Sewald.

Tri-City would go on to push two more runs across during that frame on RBI's by Bryan Muniz and Bobby Wernes, cutting the Batavia lead to two.

After the Muckdogs would go on to score once in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Hermelyn drove home Aaron Mizell with an RBI to cut Batavia's lead to 8-6 in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately, that's where the score would remain for the rest of the contest.

Offensively, Porter lead the way for the 'Cats, finishing 2-4 with his two extra-base hits, and one run batted in.

On the mound, Agapito Barrios did a solid job keeping the Batavia bats at bay after their early success, striking out two batters in three innings of relief. Juan Santos also had a solid showing on the mound for Tri-City, striking out two batters in a scoreless eighth frame.

The ValleyCats and Muckdogs will return to Dwyer Stadium on Saturday for the second game of this three-game set. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Harold Arauz (0-2, 7.40), with LHP Justin Jacome (0-0, 4.26) getting the start for Batavia.
