Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The bullpen came in relief of Leandro Linares and shut down the Brooklyn Cyclones (18-15), and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (14-19) took the first game of the series 4-3 at Eastwood Field.
The Scrappers have won four of their last five, and are 3-1 on this homestand.
Brooklyn got a run in the top of the second, but the Scrappers responded in the bottom of the third to score four runs. Jack Goihl singled to right. Silento Sayles followed with a single. Willi Castro walked. Sam Haggerty singled to right to score Goihl to tie the game. Mahoning Valley took the lead when Emmanuel Tapia singled to score Castro and Haggerty.
Brooklyn inched back with two in the fifth, but the bullpen shut the door on scoring threats in the sixth, seventh, and ninth.
In the sixth, Brock Hartson had the bases loaded with two outs and struck out Pedro Perez to end the inning. In the seventh, Jose Zapata had the bases loaded with one out. He struck out Hengelbert Rojas and Brandon Brosher to get the final two outs, and to leave the bases loaded.
The ninth inning is what did it. Yoiber Marquina walked Tucker Tharp. Branden Kaupe reached on a throwing error by Marquina. With nobody out, the Cyclones had the tying run on third, and the go ahead run on first. Marquina struck out Vinny Siena. He struck out Alfredo Reyes. He got Rojas to ground to second, leaving the tying run 90 feet away.
Hartson (2-0) got the win, while Tyler Badamo (1-4) took the loss for Brooklyn. Marquina earned his second save of the season. The Scrappers and Cyclones play the second game of their series on Saturday night at 7:05. Shao-Ching Chiang takes the hill for the Scrappers against Gaby Almonte.
