Black Bears Keep Rolling with 7-5 Win over Staten Island Yankees

The West Virginia Black Bears extended their winning streak to seven games after defeating the Staten Island Yankees 7-5 on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, West Virginia improves to 18-16 overall while the Yankees fall to 19-14 this season.

Staten Island took an early lead when 2B Brandon Wagner hit a solo shot with one out in the first inning. The two teams played a scoreless second inning before the West Virginia offense had a huge third inning. C Christian Kelley led the inning off with a base-hit and was sacrificed to second on a bunt which was followed by an RBI single from SS Kevin Newman to tie the game at 1-1. 2B Kevin Kramer then doubled to RF, scoring Newman from second who had stolen second base during the at-bat. Kramer proceeded to steal third base and then scored on a single to second base by LF Ty Moore .DH Daniel Arribas got his share in the RBI column when he later ripped a run-scoring single to center field. 1B Albert Baur grounded out to second in the next at-bat but the ground-ball scored RF Logan Hill from third who had reached base after being hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. CF Casey Hughston crossed the last run of the inning for the Black Bears on a single ripped through the left-side, scoring Arribas from second.

Staten Island scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth, where RP Jonathan Minier recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning. With the score 6-5 going into the bottom of the eighth, Hill added an insurance run for the Black Bears on a double to deep right field to add on to improve his league-leading RBI total to 30.

SP Seth McGarry had a solid outing on the mound and tossed 4.0 innings of one-run baseball, striking out two and allowing only three hits. RP Jerry Mulderig pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two runs, but earned his first win of the season (1-1). RP's Jonathan Minier and Julio Eusebio combined to pitch the final three innings of the game where Eusebio would earn his team-leading third save of the season. Staten Island starter Derek Callahan took the loss after pitching only 2.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.

West Virginia recorded a season-high with their 15 hits on Friday night, including six in the third inning. Arribas went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI while Newman also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

The Black Bears return to action against the Yankees again on Saturday, July 25 at Monongalia County Ballpark where RHP Jonathan Brubaker will start the game for West Virginia. Saturday is Star Wars night at the ballpark where there will be special jerseys worn during the game to be auctioned off to benefit WVU Medicine Children's in addition to special appearances by Star Wars characters.
