Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Victor Robles took a 1-2 offering out the of the park to lead off the game for the Auburn Doubledays and Mariano Rivera, son of the legendary Yankees' closer, closed out the Spinners with a "look what I found catch" as Lowell dropped their third straight, 5-3, Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
Auburn (15-18) struck first as Robles took Jake Cosart deep to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead. The Doubledays would extend their lead in the second on Cosart's second wild pitch of the inning to push the lead to 2-0.
Lowell (17-17) pulled even in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff double by Austin Rei. Hector Lorenzana followed with a single to right to pull the Spinners within a run. After two quick outs, an infield single by Jeremy Rivera was compounded by a throwing error by Kelvin Gutierrez to allow Lorenzana to score and even things at two.
The Doubledays responded almost instantly however on an inning to forget for the Spinners. With Enfember Martinez on for Cosart a one-out single was compounded by a wild pitch. Gutierrez followed with an RBI double, coming all the way around to score himself after a bobble by Jordon Austin allowed him to advance to third and then Rivera's relay went wide. After a two-out double by Jakson Reetz, an error by Tucker Tubbs allowed Reetz to score to push the lead to 5-2.
The Spinners would make things interesting in the ninth after Rei reached on an error to lead off the inning. A second error, this time by the pitcher Rivera, allowed Lorenzana to reach. A double by Austin plated Rei but Rivera struck out on a foul-tip and Tate Matheny's scorcher up the middle ended up in Rivera's glove to end the game.
Offensively the Spinners were led by Aneudis Peralta's two doubles. Rivera also had two hits while Rei doubled and scored a pair of runs.
Cosart was charged with two runs on four hits and a pair of walks over five innings. He struck out five. Martinez (1-1, 4.82) was charged with three runs, two earned, on six hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out three. Taylor Nunez pitched a flawless 1.1 innings of relief, striking out one, to give the Spinners a chance for the comeback.
Lowell looks to snap their three-game losing skid Saturday evening for Pirates Day at LeLacheur Park. The day will also include a salute to Toy Story, with the movie shown on the board following the game, and it is Autism Awareness Day. Jose Almonte (2-1, 3.86) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
