Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their second consecutive win on Friday night with a 4-2 win against the Aberdeen IronBirds. The Cutters opened the three game series on a positive note as Mitch Gueller tossed 6.2 innings of two run baseball matching a season high with six strikeouts.
The IronBirds looked poised to put up runs early and often against the Cutters as the first three batters reached base against Gueller in the bottom of the first inning. Gueller did his best to limit the damage along with some help from his shortstop Grenny Cumana as Aberdeen would score just one run after back to back groundouts to end the frame.
Williamsport responded quickly using some quick strike offense in the top of the second inning as Jose Pujols and Brendon Hayden singled to put a pair of runners on base. With the bases loaded Gregori Rivero hit a groundball to the right side that would allow a run to score tying the game 1-1. Cumana gave the Cutters a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to right field and Mark Laird would make it 3-1 with an RBI single.
The Cutters looked to open up the lead in the top of the fifth inning against Aberdeen by loading the bases. IronBirds starter Travis Seabrooke did his best to limit the damage as Williamsport would get one run on a groundout from Pujols to make it 4-1. Gueller would allow a second run in the seventh inning to end his night, but Anthony Sequeira picked up a huge strikeout to end the inning with the Cutters on top 4-2. Aberdeen wouldn't go down without a fight against Sequeira in the ninth inning as they were able to get two runners into scoring position. Sequeira picked up his third strikeout of the night to notch the Cutters 23rd win of the season.
