Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL - The Iowa Stars defeated the Peoria Rivermen by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night at Carver Arena. Although the Rivermen had lost four games this season prior to this set-back, they had not yet been shut out. Iowa netminder Mike Smith dealt the Rivermen their first shutout loss in franchise history by stopping all 29 shots that he faced.
The Rivermen opened the 2005-06 season with three wins before dropping their first decision 3-1 to the Houston Aeros back on October 14 at Carver Arena. The team's second loss came on the road, a 6-1 loss at Manitoba on October 20. Peoria's third and fourth losses this season then came in consecutive games on November 5 versus Omaha, a 3-2 loss, and November 11 versus Toronto, a 4-2 loss. In each of those losses, Peoria was able to score at least one goal, unlike tonight.
The shutout loss drops Peoria to an overall record of 11-5-0-1 and a home record of 6-4-0-1. With the 2-0 victory, Iowa improves to 7-10-0-0 on the season and 3-5-0-0 on the road.
Iowa right wing B. J. Crombeen scored the first goal of the game in the first period. After retrieving the puck in the left corner, Crombeen carried it out almost to the left face-off dot before firing a snap shot along the ice that slipped past Rivermen goaltender Reinhard Divis at 18:47 of the first.
On a Stars power play in the second period, Iowa left wing Loui Eriksson put his team up 2-0 by redirecting a nice pass from Crombeen into an open goal. Crombeen got it to Eriksson from the right corner by threading the puck through two Peoria defenders and across the top of the crease. All Eriksson had to do to score the goal was put his stick down on the ice at the 13:20 mark of the middle frame.
After completing a four-game homestand with this loss, the Rivermen will now travel to Milwaukee to take on the Milwaukee Admirals this coming Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
