Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 4-3 in overtime on the road to the Philadelphia Phantoms Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 on the same Wachovia Center ice.
Despite a long night of travel from Upstate New York following games yesterday, the teams played a fast-paced first period after which the Sound Tigers led 2-0 on a pair of goals that were scored just 17 seconds apart. Travis Brigley notched his fourth of the season on the power play off assists from Wyatt Smith and Matt Koalska at 15:22 to make it 1-0, and Jeremy Colliton added his fifth at 15:39 off assists from Steve Regier and Bruno Gervais at 15:39 to make it 2-0. Colliton had been returned to the Sound Tigers on loan from the Islanders just before the game after being recalled by the big club earlier in the week.
Philadelphia started the middle frame on a 10-0 shots on goal run and cut the Sound Tigers' lead to 2-1 along the way on Charlie Cook's first goal of the year, unassisted, at the 3:30 mark just seconds after a Phantoms power play had expired.
The Sound Tigers appeared to have regained the two-goal lead with 3:26 left in the period when Bruno Gervais took a shot from the neutral zone that skipped up off the ice and over the shoulder of Philadelphia netminder Jamie Storr, but the play was ruled off-sides. However, Gervais did increase the Sound Tigers' lead to 3-1 only 55 seconds later when he lofted a wrist shot through traffic and past Storr off assists from Cole Jarrett and Smith. It was the seventh goal of the season for Gervais tying him with Smith and Koalska for the team lead.
Pat Kavanagh pulled the Phantoms to within 3-2 with his team-leading tenth goal of the season off assists form Ben Eager and Brent Kelly 6:43 into the third period. Eager then tied the score at 3-3 with his fourth tally of the year off assists from Cook and Kavanagh with 2:56 left to play. Like Cook, Eager scored just seconds after a Philadelphia power play had expired.
The Sound Tigers were put shorthanded just 27 seconds into the extra session on a hooking penalty to Koalska, and the Phantoms took advantage as Freddy Meyer chipped home his third goal of the season at the 1:11 mark off assists from Eric Chouinard and John Slaney for the win.
Philadelphia was 1 for 8 on the power play and had a 32-18 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 5 on the power play. Madden made 28 saves in a losing effort while Storr earned the win with 15. Meyer was the first star of the game, Eager the second and Cook the third.
The Sound Tigers will finish a stretch of four straight road games when they visit the Hershey Bears this coming Wednesday, November 30th at 7 p.m. and the Lowell Lock Monsters this coming Friday, December 1st at 7:35 p.m. All Sound Tigers games are web-cast live at www.soundtigers.com. Fans can also watch all games live on the B2 Networks.
The Sound Tigers' next home games at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be next Saturday and Sunday, December 3rd and 4th when they will host the Phantoms Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at 4:05 p.m. The Sound Tigers will also be home on Wednesday, December 7th to host Hershey at 11 a.m. in the third-annual, educationally-themed "Cool Fun 101" morning game.
