Portland, Maine - Chad Larose scored three times and added a pair of assists as the Lowell Lock Monsters (10-9-1-2) outlasted the Portland Pirates (14-5-1-0) 7-6 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday evening. The offensive output matched a season high for Lowell.

The Lock Monsters came out of the gate strong, taking nine of the first 11 shots in the game and opening a 2-0 lead. Johnny Boychuk made it 1-0 with a wrister from the top of the slot, and Chad Larose lifted home a backhander on a rebound at 5:21. Tim Brent put Portland on the board at 7:55, but the Monsters answered right back just one minute and one second later. Danny Richmond's shot from the left circle went in off a Pirates skate and in, and Lowell regained the two-goal advantage. Each member of the Forbes-Aucoin-Larose line extended their scoring streaks (six games - seven games - six games, respectively).

The second period turned into a barn-burner with eight total goals scored. A power play goal in the first minute of the middle stanza brought Portland back to within one, as Corey Perry recorded his third tally in three games since being assigned by Anaheim. The Pirates tied it at 6:52 with former Monster Kip Brennan's first of the season. But Larose once again put the Monsters back in front just 57 seconds later. His 11th goal of the season made it 4-3. A burst of three goals in the span of just two minutes later in the period kept the score climbing. Bruno St. Jacques and Brennan (his second of the game) scored less than a minute apart to make it 5-4 Portland, giving the home team their first lead of the game. Then David Gove notched his seventh of the season on a delayed penalty with a slapper at 14:39. Igor Pohanka regained the lead for Portland late in the period, but Larose's third of the game in the waning seconds made it 6-6 after 40 minutes.

Nathan Marsters replaced Gregg Naumenko between the Portland Pipes to start the third. He kicked out a big rebound on a Keith Aucoin shot and Colin Forbes deposited it in the net from a sharp angle to put Lowell up 7-6 with just under eight minutes to play. Lowell was called for a penalty with just 1:29 left in regulation, still nursing narrow margin, but two late saves by Kolesnik and solid penalty killing held off the Pirates late efforts. Allowing just one goal in his 20 minutes of play, Marsters suffered just his second loss of the season. Meanwhile, Larose came through with a five-point night and his line combined for 12 points (4g-8a).

Next weekend the Monsters host a pair of games, with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in town on Friday night and the Providence Bruins on Saturday. Both games start at 7:35 p.m. Saturday's game features the annual Teddy Bear Toss, sponsored by Lowell General Hospital. Everyone is asked to bring a new Teddy Bear or other stuffed animal to the game, and when the Monsters score their first goal of the night, throw the animals on the ice. The teddy bears will be donated to the Pediatric Unit and other local charities.
