PORTLAND, ME- Portland Pirates Managing Owner/CEO, Brian Petrovek issued the following statement today on Civic Center naming rights:

"As active members of the local business community, taxpayers and the prime tenant in the Cumberland County Civic Center, we were appalled and dismayed to learn that the Civic Center Trustees have voted not to pursue a potentially lucrative naming rights relationship at this time, in the face of favorable votes by the Chair and Vice Chair of the Trustees. The decision is senseless and irresponsible.

In October, after months of review, the Trustees voted 5 - 2 on this issue, to not pursue naming rights. This week, the vote was 4 - 4, returning the matter to the Trustees' Marketing Committee for further review. The Trustees essentially have determined at this time that improving the financial condition of the building and enhancing the "fan experience" for the taxpayers of Cumberland County and other users of the facility who pay to attend events there is not the preferred course of action moving forward. The taxpayers of Cumberland County and all users of the facility deserve better. We cannot understand how Trustees with a fiduciary duty to the taxpayers of Cumberland County could make such a decision. This matter is black and white and irrefutable.

We can only hope that the affirmative and responsible position taken by the Board Chair, Vice Chair and now two additional Trustees will prevail and that the Board will reconsider this decision once again, promptly, to where, perhaps, the third time will be the charm."
